Day 23: Falafel kerfuffle

I said it before, but I’ll say it again here: Vegan-ing in the comfort of your own home is easy and fun, so long as you have a bit of time, creativity, and like cooking from scratch… but once you’re outside foraging for lunch, things get a bit trickier. 

Make no bones about it, the little sainsburys near Jones’ flat is RUBBISH for vegan stuff! I was working from home (or, working from Jones’) and popped out to find something to put in my pitta bread, and you know, I really struggled!

I had already had one pitta for breakfast, lovingly toasted with avocado and cherry tomatoes on top. Now the challenge was to find something different to go in it that wasn’t my usual cheese and/or ham.

In desperation I came close to buying a tub of 3-bean salad or vegetable couscous to use as filling (I was put off because the beans were minted, and the couscous hardly had any veg in it), but then I spotted a pack of two sweet potato bhajis in the snack section. That’ll do!

Home, kettle on, sweet potato bhajis and a bit of lettuce in a pitta. Plus hoola hoops. Not bad at all.

Dinner actually turned out to be on a similar theme, as Jones whipped up some truly delicious spiced falafel and roasted a pepper… these he popped in a pitta for us, with halved cherry tomatoes and a good handful of lettuce, as portable pre-rehearsal train noms.

They were really tasty (though I made such a mess! Crumbs all over me), even if they barely survived an encounter with half a bottle of Coke Zero… a woman on the train suddenly turned sideways and swiped Jones’ drink over just as we were unpacking our dinner. Thank goodness they were wrapped in clingfilm!

Pudding was two biscuits each – the vegan ones I made at the weekend. The crunchy nutty ‘Florentine’ is so tasty, I wish it had been a deliberate recipe rather than a failed cookie! I wonder if I’ll ever be able to replicate it…

Today I ate/drank…

  • Tea with oat milk 
  • Pitta bread with sweet potato bhajis and lettuce
  • Bag of hula hoops 
  • Falafel pitta with lettuce, tomato, and roasted red pepper
  • Fanta
  • Vegan biscuits
