Got Milk?…

So being time rich today, I’m fancying a bit of self-sufficiency/no chemical nonsense filled or processed, non-dairy milk creating…or more plainly, I’m making my own oat milk…

Now last year when I tried this, I went thorough plenty of recipes online for oat and also rice milk…I didn’t find any of them to be any good really…either too watery, too thick and none just right – and not a bear in sight!

So I tweaked and experimented and used hot, cold, warm water…added sugar, salt or fruit…left the oats soaking or used them straight away, blended or straight into the electric juicer (the juicer is a beast of a thing with an evil shreddy bit which makes short work of anything)…

In the end I came up with this…meta-recipe! (Recipe seems a high fallutin’ term for 3 things when one of them is water…but it’s the process!…honest…)

100g oats

About a litre of hand warm water

2 dates

You soak the oats & dates for 30 mins : don’t use water that’s too hot/boiling or you’ll end up with porridge/glutinous mass…warm enough to start this process but not hot enough to cook it…Then blend (blend very well)…all the way up to “11”…

Then pass it through the juicer (stand clear!) -the main reason for this is to sift out the tough bits and squeeze the pulp…it would work just draining through muslin, but that would take weeks…here it is in action, keep fingers and anything else dangly out of that!…(I’m sure that if you needed to actually get blood out of a stone, this would do it)…

Pop it into a suitable container (I had to use an old almond milk container as my dullard Flatmate chucked away my litre swing top bottle) and cool in the fridge and check, once cold, how thick it is and dilute with water as needed to get to your desired consistency!…

Cheap, cheerful & playing with power tools (well almost)…and none of the nasty stabilisers they add to commercial “milks”…

Also, the stuff that gets thrown out into the pulp bin is incredibly tasty & full of fibre…makes a good breakfast addition too! – like instant porridge…

Right…Anyone for a nice cup of tea?…
